Strikeforce weigh-ins: Babalu, Hendo ready to roll

ST. LOUIS -- Strikeforce held weigh-ins to for Saturday night's bouts in front of a lively crowd at the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis. All of the main card fighters made weight on their first attempt.

After having trouble with getting to 185 lbs. for his bout with Jake Shields, Dan Henderson looked healthy as he easily made light heavyweight at 204.5 lbs. His opponent, Renato "Babalu" Sobral also had no trouble at the scales, as a loud group of Brazilian fans and fighter cheered him on. That crowd included Fedor-slayer Fabricio Werdum, who Strikeforce announcer misidentified as the Strikeforce heavyweight champ.

Late replacement Mike Kyle had an intense staredown with Antonio Silva, who outweighed Kyle by more than 40 lbs. for their heavyweight bout. Scott Smith, who is fighting Paul Daley at welterweight, looked thin and drawn out on the scales.

Watercolors from Hawaii by Ron Croci

We're proud to announce an exclusive illustrated story by one of our favourite surf artists; Ron Croci… We were alarmed to hear that Ron nearly 'met his end', due to a serious (and sudden) illness on his recent vacation to Hawaii! But we're happy to say he came through it and has shared his story with us in a series of annotated watercolor paintings documenting his near death experience, the unusual effects of morphine and the beautiful Hawaiian islands he enjoyed and surfed up until falling ill…

UFC 124 Press Conference Video

Filed under:

Dana White will run the UFC 124 press conference in Montreal.UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and No. 1 welterweight contender Josh Koscheck, along with UFC President Dana White, will meet the media Thursday for the UFC 124 pre-fight press conference, and if you can't be there in Montreal, you can watch it live at MMAFighting.com.

Throughout the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter, Koscheck has talked trash to St. Pierre and attempted to goad his rival into responding in kind. St. Pierre, as usual, has kept a level head about him, and that dynamic is likely to continue as they hype their fight for the press on Thursday.

The press conference begins at 1 PM ET and the video is below.

Brookins-Johnson final rounds out TUF 12 finale card

After Wednesday night's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," we now know that the show will be co-headlined by Jonathan Brookins vs. Michael Johnson. Other bouts have also been added to the card: WEC veteran Leonard Garcia will fight Nam Pham while TUF 12 castmembers Aaron Wilkinson and Cody McKenzie will face off and Sako Chivitchian will fight Kyle Watson.

Johnson's stock was hot early in the season, as Georges St. Pierre even played some mind games with Josh Koscheck so that GSP could have Johnson on his team. At 24 years old, he's young, loaded with talent and has a good base in wrestling. He has a beautiful blast double takedown that proved to be hard to stop.

Still, he clearly has a lot to learn about fighting, as he ate many strikes during his bout with Nam Phan. His movement is slow and plodding, and he has an odd tendency of ducking strikes instead of trying to check, catch or block them. With his short, squat frame, ducking punches doesn't really work.

Despite being a fighter who fought UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo and lived to tell about it, Brookins wasn't as sought after. That's hard to believe when looking at how his skills progressed and how dominant he was on the show. He choked out Sevak Magakian, rear naked choked Sako Chivitchian and then to get in the final, dominated teammate Kyle Watson.

Brookins has a nasty submission game, which could prove to be a problem for Johnson. All four of Johnson's losses before the show came by submission. Brookins also has more experience of the bright lights of a big promotion, having fought both in Bellator and in the WEC.

What do you think? Will Johnson's raw talent trump Brookins' calm but deadly ground game?
